After-school classes starting in January 2024! Empower yourself with the knowledge and tools to continue with your curiosity long past the last day of class!

Sewing with Shapes

In this class, you'll get step-by-step instruction to guide you through the basics of sewing and help you discover how to combine shapes to create visually stunning designs. With hands-on experience, you'll gain the confidence to create your own unique designs. Come join us and unlock your creativity with Sewing with Shapes!

What you will get out of class:

  1. Learn the basics of fashion sketching, including sketching on a croquis

  2. Practice sewing basics by creating a sewing stitch sample

  3. Handmade garment that captures the concept(s) of creating from 2D shapes to 3D forms

  4. A Sewing and Design kit to use throughout the class and to keep for future fashion projects at home

Location: Muirlands Middle School, Art Room

Date and Time: Wednesdays at 2:30-4PM

Exact Dates: Jan 17, Jan 24, Feb 7, Feb 14, Feb 21, Feb 28, Mar 6, Mar 13, Mar 20, Mar 27, Apr 17, Apr 24 (No classes Jan 31, Apr 3, Apr 10)

NOTE: About one hour of time each week is required outside of class in order to keep up with the 12-week class.

Tuition: $475 (Cost includes ALL materials necessary, including a sewing and design kit to keep.)

Haute Hemlines

In this class, you'll leverage what you learned from Sewing with Shapes into an introductory draping and patternmaking class. Working with a small scale dressform, you will learn to drape and draft various styles (flared, fitted, pleated, etc.) of skirts each week.  The semester project will be a full size skirt - designed, drafted and constructed by YOU. The class focus is on design, construction and not how to sew stitches. L​et's get creative and learn how skirts are constructed!

***This class does NOT have a prerequisite. Please keep in mind that the class will not be focused on sewing stitches. The student will only be using the basting stitch.***

What you will get out of class:

  1. Learn the basics of draping and patternmaking

  2. Learn about textiles and understand how various fabric create shapes

  3. Handmade skirts that captures the concepts of creating from 2D shapes to 3D forms

The Geometry of Fashion: A Design Course

An introductory patternmaking class designed for teens. The course will cover the basics of using geometry concepts to create patterns for clothing.

By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of the basics of sewing and how geometry concepts can be used to create simple and stylish clothing items. They will also have hands-on experience in creating simple garments using their own patterns.
